Solicitor and Principal
Graduated with LL.B degree from the University of London
A. R. Brown & Co. was established by its founder Alan Brown in January 1986. Alan’s career in the law commenced in Local Government where he gained considerable experience in constitutional and administrative law and practice. The position led to the award of a Degree in Local Government Administration (DMA). Following the local government reorganisation in 1973, Alan was appointed as Senior Solicitor to the Worthing Borough Council. At that time, in his private capacity, Alan gave advice to and supported a number of local charities, in particular the Durrington Community Association (as one of the original Committee to obtain the release of land from the Borough Council to build a new Community Centre), as Secretary to the High Salvington Mill Trust and as adviser to the Sea Front Fayre Association.
Over the years, Alan has gained experience in most areas of the law but in recent years has come to specialise in the following fields:
- Business sales and acquisitions and related licensing matters - (for example licensed premises, post offices, shops)
- Residential Conveyancing
- Grant of business leases
- Equity release
- Equity release mortgages through various lenders
- Employment law
- Planning and Local Government matters
Outside of work, Alan has a great interest in Worthing history. In pursuing such interests, he has supported the restoration of the Grade II star listed Dome Cinema for almost 20 years. Together with his fellow Trustees on the Worthing Dome Regeneration Trust he helped to secure a lottery grant of over £1.5 million to restore the building. Meanwhile, his love of ‘Worthing Past’ was illustrated through his commissioning a multitude of models of old Worthing and Sussex landmarks to be made and displayed in A. R. Brown & Co.’s windows by the renowned Worthing model maker Ted Bayley, leading to the firm’s popular nickname “the Model Solicitors”. Also, as a great supporter of local art, Alan has more recently founded on the ground floor of his firm a considerable art gallery space so that the work of budding artists can be displayed for public viewing at certain times (see the ‘gallery’ section of this website for more information).
